Irish Blood Transfusion Service has successfully navigated 3 rounds of auditing which proved their performance, trust and customer-centricity.

The auditing process has left us in no doubt as to Irish Blood Transfusion Service’s suitability for Business All-Star accreditation and their inclusion in The Register of Irish Business Excellence (TRIBE).

Message from Idelle Hawkin - HR Director, Irish Blood Transfusion Service

We at the Irish Blood Transfusion Service are delighted to achieve Business All-Star Accreditation. The accreditation process gave us the opportunity to reflect on our achievements, what our services mean for patients and donors, and what we can do to continue to improve these into the future.

The opportunity to receive first-hand feedback from the panel, our staff, the hospitals we serve, and the donors we rely on, through the reference check round was particularly insightful.

1 in 4 people will need a blood transfusion at some stage during their lifetime. We are very fortunate to have such dedicated and professional staff across all parts of our organisation, and such committed donors who enable the provision of a safe and sustainable supply of blood and blood products to patients in Ireland.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank not only the Foundation but also our valued staff, our customers, our donors and everyone else who supports us. We look forward to continuing to meet and indeed exceed the standards of excellence set by
the AIBF.

Irish Blood Transfusion Service

The IBTS is the statutory body with sole responsibility for the supply of blood and blood components to all 61+ hospitals in the Rep of Ireland. It also provides testing and tissue services to hospitals and is responsible for the Irish Unrelated Bone Marrow Registry.

Red blood cells

Every year about 70,000 people are transfused. To meet this need IBTS needs to collect about 3,000 donations a week. We aim to hold about 7 days’ supply at any time, as blood only lasts 35 days. It is estimated that 1 in 4 people will need a transfusion at some stage in their lives – but only 3% of the eligible population are active blood donors. That’s why we are always looking for more donors, and existing donors to give more regularly. Blood donation in Ireland is altruistic, 100% voluntary, and donors can give blood every 90 days. Donors can visit our website to check their eligibility and find a clinic near them.

Platelets are a specialised blood product used primarily to treat cancer. Without a supply of platelets, these treatments simply couldn’t happen. Platelets only last up to 7 days from time of collection so we are constantly looking for platelets donors (there is some extra criteria in addition to blood eligibility). The process of donating platelets is different to blood donation and can only be done at either our centers in NBC, St James campus, Dublin or St Finbars in Cork. Platelet donors can give every 28 days.

Bone Marrow registry / Stem Cells

IBTS manages the Irish bone marrow registry where donors can help patients all over the world. We particularly target 18-25-year-olds to sign up via our blood donation clinics.
